History

Before and during the Second World War the airport in Szymany was used by the German Air Force. After the war finished, it served the Polish Air Force. In the 60's the airport's parameters were upgraded to II military class.

16th January 1996 - Due to decreased use by the military, the airport was commisioned for use by both by military and civilian aircraft. By virtue of the provisions of the District Court in Olsztyn, the Mazury-Szczytno Airport company was founded as a limited liability corporation.

June 1996 - the first landing of a LOT Polish Airlines ATR-72 aircraft with passengers on board.

10th October 2001 - By a regulation of the Council of Ministers, the airport was added to the list of airports authorized to serve international takeoffs and landings (air border crossing).

22nd August 2002 - The Ministry of Defense transfers the airport to the Military Property Agency.

14th May 2003 - The Mazury-Szczytno Airport company obtains certificate No. PL-15H/03 of a handling agent, enabling it to conduct: handling of passengers and baggage, air-side service of aircraft, aircraft fueling services and provision of ground transportation between aircraft and the airport terminal.

30th November 2003 - the military leaves the airport.

2nd  December 2005 - the airport was registered as No. 59 civil, public-use airport in the Polish Register of Civil Airports, with a reference code of  3C.

27th October 2006 - The Civil Aviation Authority certified the air-side part of the airport.

November 2008 ? European Business Partners sp. z o.o. of Warsaw purchased 60% of the shares in the airport management company.  This is the first privatization of a Polish regional airport.

May 2009 - The airport management company changes its name to Port Lotniczy Mazury sp. z o.o., and the airports name is changed to the Mazury Airport.
